Foal Immunodeficiency Syndrome (FIS)
This is a page dedicated to FIS education for the Dales Pony owner. Any
information about FIS that we get from the Dales Pony Society in the UK, or
links to information we find on line will be posted on this page. It is very
important that we test our Dales Ponies for carrier status so that we may
breed responsibly.
Instructions to have a pony FIS Tested:

1) THE DPS has samples of all English registered Dales Ponies born before the
year 2002 unless the breeder only submitted a DNA marker report and not hair. If it
is unknown if the pony has hair samples in the UK, have a licensed veterinarian
collect hair by the ROOTS with at least 50 pieces and place in either a plastic bag
provided by DPS or in a zip lock bag with a seal. Have the veterinarian fill out a
DNA or FIS sticker and sign the bottom.

2) Send hair samples off to DPS secretary, Mrs. Jo Ashby if she does not have the
hair on file. The fee is 40 GBP to be sent with the hair samples. Money can be in
the form of pound sterling cash, travelers cheques, or bank cheques in pound
sterling.

3) Mrs. Ashby will send hair samples to the AHT in Newmarket, UK to run the
sample. This process will take up to 30 days. ALL SAMPLES MUST be provided to
the AHT by the DPS!

4) Once the AHT has the results of the sample the results will be mailed back to
the DPS office in the UK where Mrs. Ashby will put the DPS seal on the certificate
and mail it back to the owner of the said pony.

5) The DPS office has taken a vow to only release information about each pony to
its owner and will not release  your information on your pony to anyone but
yourself.

***At present time, ALL stallions presented for stallion license from 2010
forward will have to have an FIS test done on their stallions to receive a
stallion license. ***
